Handwritten notes beside typed audit findings on a desk

A management letter should help the finance team act. Vague statements about “strengthening controls” waste the conversation after fieldwork.

Anatomy of a useful point

Name the process, the sample exception, and the account affected. Example: three of twenty cash receipt batches lacked dual sign-off for deposits above the stated threshold, increasing the risk of unrecorded skimming in the hospitality till cycle.

Remedies that fit the staff you have

Recommend a compensating control that the current headcount can run — such as a weekly bank reconciliation reviewed by someone who does not open the till — rather than a perfect segregation model designed for a larger company.

Tone

Findings are not accusations. They document evidence gaps. Clients who treat the letter as a punch list usually clear more items before the next year-end.
